Philosophy of Education

John W. Schaum, the founder of Schaum Music School, often said, "It's not what the child does for music, but what music does for the child." This philosophy is the cornerstone of teaching at Schaum Music School.

Lessons are tailored to meet each student's individual interests and abilities. Some talented young people prepare to study music at major universities and conservatories. Others simply love music and learn for personal enjoyment and to enhance mental agility.

Solid musicianship is the foundation of the joy of making music. Because strong note reading skills lead to musical self-sufficiency, music theory and finger technic are an integral part of the curriculum in addition to music appreciation. Recital performance opportunities are provided several times each year at Schaum Music School and throughout the county.

The piano teaching methods developed here are highly regarded and have been widely used nationally and internationally for over 50 years. Schaum Publications, Inc., an affiliated company in the same building, continues to develop and publish new materials for keyboard teaching.
